{tab=Trip Recap}

15 enthusiastic CNPS members, plus 2 visitors had a great time on the rolling hills of the park. The weather was mild with a very slight cloud cover; perfect for a hike. The almost total the lack of rain this fall and winter (1.05 in. vs normal of 6.39 in.) has just about completely eliminated annuals from the plants pallette. But neither the lack of moisture nor the up-and-down travel detered the group in the slightest. What great enthusiasm!

At the beginning of the trip we passed out a checklist of likely plant species. We then challanged ourselves to see how many plant species we could identify during our morning trip. Early on we were listing plants right and left. We hardly got our feet on the dirt before we had probably 20 plants on our checklist. As we travelled, every few feet seemed to offer another new species or two, and another identification and learning opportiunity. As the habitats changed, so did the plants. Slight adjustments in the tilt and direction of the slope would bring new species into our view. The hillsides were quite different that the oak-lines basins. We also noticed how soil texture would have a dramatic effect on the plant offerrings and the diversity and density of the plants. Heavy clay soils were contrasted with more gritty limestone soils.

We were hoping to perhaps get to 96 species (the count from the preview trip last week). The plant tally kept getting larger and larger as everyone searched and searched and called out new species and the occasional "what's this". Popcorn flowers, native grasses, ferns, crotons, live-forevers, bedstraws, nolina and jepsonia - some very nice native plants.

The group paused at an exposed soap plant (Chlorogalum) growing on a roadcut. The soil around it had fallen away, exposing its large underground elongated bulb. A sight seldom seen.

After five and a half miles of travel from the attentive group we returned to our cars via a loop through the park. We tallied the plant list. A surprising 114 species were seen! That's quite an accomplishment, but no surprise considering the quality of the group!
