{tab=Trip Recap}

16 CNPS members and 4 guests enjoyed perfect weather and the beautiful scenary of Wood Canyon. Of course, the extremely low rainfall (1.05 in., vs. 5.30 in. normal) made annuals a rare sight, but we still saw a good variety of native plants. After a little orientation at the park prior to the walk, the group made it all the way to the Mathis Canyon trail, then returned. A total distance of almost six miles.

As the group walked along the wide, easy trail we stopped frequently to discuss the habitats and the plant communities. Of course, we spent most of our time identifying and explaining the subtle differences between our native plant species. Some particular lessons included Opuntias vs. Cylindropuntias, Opuntia littoralis vs. O. oricola, native bunch grasses vs. annual European grasses, coast live oak vs. scrub oak, Artemisia californica vs. A. douglasiana, Galium aparine vs. G. angustifolium and others. In total, we identified 74 plant species during the visit.

We are always fortunate to have so many experts on various topics along on our trips and the sharing of knowledge is one of the highlightsd of these trips. Today we heard lessons from Celia Kutcher about several conservation issues, from Mark Sugars about some of the history as well as the invasive plants in the canyon and bird experts including Andy Lazere keept us posting on interesting birds along the way.
