March 26, 9am —Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park

Saturday, March 26, field trip to Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. Meet at trailhead for Borrego Canyon Trail, west side of the park. Park in the OC Parks lot nearby ($ or annual pass) or in the large open lot across Portola Parkway (free). Meet at 9 am, depart trailhead at 9:15am. We'll inventory the plants in the park by going up Borrego Canyon Trail, up Mustard, then a left into Red Rock Canyon. We'll return the same route.

Bring hat, water, snacks, field guide, camera, & happy attitude!

April 23—Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, in search of Allen’s Daisy, Pentachaeta aurea ssp. allenii. (Note the date change!)



May 28—San Onofre State Park, to search for Ferocactus viridescens – San Diego Barrel Cactus. Binoculars highly recommended.

April 10, 8:30 – 3: IRC Tour in the Foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains

Travel by touring truck and on foot to hunt for plants and arthropod friends in the Irvine Ranch Wildlands through oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and needlegrass grassland. IRC Senior Field Ecologist Jutta Burger will lead.

May 15 (Sunday), 10 – 12: Tyke Hike at Nix Nature Center, Laguna Coast Wilderness

Ages 4 – 9, plus a parent (required!) or two.

This is a fun trip designed to captivate the interests of our budding naturalists. Discover of some of Orange County’s natural history in an easily accessible wilderness area. Bugs, flowers, galls, acorns, rocks—there are always nature’s treasures to be discovered along the easy trail that we will follow. At the end of the day, take advantage of the Nix Nature Center displays.

Pack lunch for the family and bring along a small backpack with a magnifying glass, binoculars, flower book, bird book, bug book—or just snacks and water. Lunch in the shade on the picnic tables. Visit our website for last minute details.

May 22—Santa Ana Mountains Car/Truck Tour

Sponsored by NABA (North American Butterfly Association) and SAMNHA (Santa Ana Mountains Natural History Association), Larry Shaw and Lee Shoemaker will lead this all day excursion into the Santa Ana Mountains. Required reservations will be taken after April 1. The trip is limited to 12 vehicles. Drivers of sturdy vehicles should state how many passengers they can take.
